Victorian Oamaru & penguins

Continuing the weekend off adventures… today we left an overnight dumping of snow in ashburton and arrived in Oamaru. Its a bit of a random town, being located further south and so less susceptible to earthquakes all the buildings are bigger and more permanent. A drive into the town will eventually lead you to the victorian district and harbour.

We arrived at the Steampunk capital of NZ (steampunk is an industrial victorian/alternative style). Some of the creations were pretty impressive, and a trip into the courtyard shows just how large some of the pieces are.

Another main attraction here are the penguin colonies, in the height of the season there are up to 190 breeding pairs. We had an explore around the area and went to the evening viewing. There is a seating area next to the penguins route in from a days fishing to the nesting area.
