Finally Queenstown

After working the long weekend, I decided to make the most of my weekend off, extend it a few extra days and finally journey over to Queenstown.

The Volvo got put back to normal for this trip to make it comfortable, interior back in and the exhaust welded up (ironically its the most legal it has been for ages and i got pulled over and fined for no seatbelt on the 70m of road between work and nipping into the auto parts place to grab some new window wipers on my lunch break! by an undercover cop car.)

Friday lunch time rocked around and i finished to begin the 4 hour drive.

The roads become increasingly interesting on this trip, the first 2 hours is the same route up to mount cook, then it becomes as bit more windy.

The view from the hotel was pretty spectacular, a quick walk into town and an explore and the day was already over!

Saturday morning I came up with a plan…. Fernbaker for coffee and a pie, then hit the gondola.

Side point, the ferg joints are a bit of an institution in queenstown, and i heard about them on the news the other day as the FergBurger had just been voted NZ’s best burger. On friday night there was a 50 strong que out the door and around the same sat around eating so they must be doing something right.

We made our way to the gondola and headed up the mountain, the views are pretty stunning and have to say the restaurant at the top has a pretty unique selling point.

Time to attack the Luge! A simple concept, a go kart powered by gravity and a concrete bob sled run down the side of the mountain with a chair lift taking you up again. It was great fun, (ok on my first run i beached out assuming i could ride the incline around the edge to maintain speed round corners…you can’t) after this children, hen do’s and confused asian drivers were no match for dick head overtaking manoeuvres.

A bit more bumming around town then a two hour dash to Te Anua for a sunday cruise in the Milford Sound, but not to worry then a few more days in queenstown.

Purely because the street name in Te Anua made me laugh.
